The AJSS x Green Office collaboration on Critical Sustainability

Call for papers

The Amsterdam Journal of Social Sciences, in collaboration with the UvA Green Office, invites submissions for a themed edition on Critical Sustainability. We understand critical sustainability in two complementary senses. First, it denotes an interdisciplinary approach to the climate crisis that moves beyond mainstream, market-based solutions and conceives of environmental breakdown as inseparable from other ongoing social struggles. Second, it refers to the practice of creating spaces in which people can boldly re-imagine alternatives to the polluting socio-economic status quo.

Taken together, these definitions position sustainability not as a technical problem awaiting efficient management, but as a contested political and social question that demands critical inquiry. We therefore welcome contributions that interrogate dominant sustainability paradigms, examine the entanglement of ecological and social injustice, or explore alternative imaginaries and practices.

Theses, articles, and op-eds may be submitted to ajss@uva.nl by 5 November.
